Basic English

Module 1: Parts of Speech (Word Classes)

Introduction to Basic English

Basic English is the foundation course that gives learners the essential tools for understanding and using the English language correctly. It builds confidence in reading, writing, speaking and listening by starting with the simplest building blocks of language: words and how they behave.

Module 1 introduces the parts of speech, also called word classes. Every word in a sentence belongs to one of nine classes: nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, prepositions, conjunctions, interjections and articles. Each class does a particular job, and each has minor categories that describe its types in more detail.

Knowing these classes helps you build correct sentences, recognise errors, choose the right word, and understand grammar rules in later modules. By the end of this module, you should be able to identify each word class, name its types, and use them accurately in your own sentences.
